What is Jaisalmer Desert Festival?

I would say it is An annual offering from the state of Rajasthan to showcase its culture and people to the outer world. Being celebrated in the month of February every year in the heart of Jaisalmer city, This festival is actually popular worldwide. Thousands visit this festival from foreign countries.

Apart from this, I love this fest so much that I would say This is not just a celebration “It’s like a blessing”. The beauty of the Jaisalmer Desert Festival Literally can not be described in words.

By the way, if you still have some curiosity to know more, you can directly go to the Rajasthan Tourism website.

Jaisalmer or The Golden City

The Great king Maharawal Jaisal in 1156 AD Founded the Jaisalmer Fort and the city. Although the fort itself is giving shelters to one-fourth of the total population. Just have a look at the Jaisalmer’s own site for knowing it closely

Most of them who reside in the fort have shops running inside. That’s another reason the fort is called “A Living Fort“. Garnished with the yellow sandstone architecture, the city is called the Golden City or Swarn Nagari. Besides having a small area of 62 square km it has an abundance of places to explore.

You might have seen dawn but can you imagine a dawn in Jaisalmer? When the first ray of light drops on the yellow sandstone and the yellow sand dunes, it shines like gold. Now you know why it is called “The Golden city“. I was fortunate enough to experience it at the Jaisalmer desert festival 2021. Now, whenever someone asks me I will make sure that I recommend at least one night in Jaisalmer.

Dine With Jaisalmer

I was in the house of Mr. Dinesh Vyas Ji and Mrs. Yogita Vyas Ji. Mr. Vyas is also in the Travel industry and works for a foreign travel company. Currently, he is working on The Lost recipes of Rajasthan, which in fact made me curious. He did not know me before a couple of hours but when you have this will to shower your love on someone, knowing each other does not matter and he had that will.

Vyas Famiy

I was in the Shaheed Poonam Singh stadium when I heard this announcement of Dine with Jaisalmer. An event organized on the sidelines of the desert festival by ILoveJaisalmer, In which I had to register online to have lunch with the local family of the city. I made my mind about this. But Instantly after registering tens of questions stuck in my mind left me thinking. How would be the family? Will they treat us properly? These were the questions that came to my subconscious mind. But the traveler inside was pushing me ahead.

At Nachana Haveli I met him the first time. We were a group of six along with my 12-year old cousin brother, who was about to shower by this Typical Vaishnav Hindu family. It was the first time Dine with Jaisalmer was organised and also first time experience like this for me.

We were welcomed with flower Garlands and Tilak. After this, we talked a lot and he described how the Akshaya Tritiya is more important than the Diwali in his family and how they prepared a theme lunch, usually prepared on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya.

As we were talking, the lunch was here and it was looking amazing. The best part is Mr. Vyas literally told us about how to eat this special food. Because I belong to a Rajasthani family I know a bit of this but it was very helpful for those who were in the group from Delhi and did not know about this food.

In the end, we were served a special drink and the yummy Paan. Seriously we all were feeling like a king in heaven because the whole Vyas family was looked after us. They proved the Sanskrit shloka “Atithi Devo Bhava” is true. While Registering I was told that they will shower all the love on me and the Vyas family literally did it.

I hope The Dine with Jaisalmer Culture will continue and tourists would also enjoy what I have experienced.

What To See In Jaisalmer Desert Festival

This is a two to four days carnival usually celebrated in the month of February. It showcases multiple events focusing on delivering the fragrance of Rajasthani culture. Out of all the major events a few are very popular for instance Mr. Desert and Mrs. Moomal contest. Both of the competitions require young males and females to dress up in traditional dresses. The most handsome and beautiful girl wins. But here is what I personally like the most, The Long Mustache contest. I still remember, What a wonderful scene it was. Amazing.

There were nearly 15 men on the stage showing their long mustaches and judges were measuring the hairs. Every time a contestant used to open up his mustache the public in front of them was hooting and showing their love for them. Seriously, This is a scene where everyone gets goosebumps. Such a stunning environment. Words can not describe the real picture so Just have a look at the pictures.

Late In the night, there used to be some musical performances by the popular singer at Gadisar lake and Sand Dunes. Can you imagine an open sky concert with twinkling stars and dashing lightings? I think A night can not be more charming than this. You just get lost somewhere besides being in a crowd of thousands. Lovely!

I can keep writing If I tell you about every event. From Good morning to Good night, I can talk about the festival. Haha! That’s why I have also made videos which you can watch on my YouTube channel. Let me just name the other competitions Heritage Walk, Drawing Competition, Camel Decoration, Army bands, Musical performances, Folk dances, and whatnot. You can only experience them while being a part of this celebration. So are you coming next year?
