Lodhi Fort in Ludhiana city, Near Clock Tower An Abandoned & Unexplored Heritage.

Overview

Before telling you about Lodhi Fort in Ludhiana city, let me ask you few things. Do you know who settled the city of Ludhiana and how it got its name? It is important for me to ask you this. Because it might not be a secret but still, there are thousands who actually do not know about the story behind the Lodhi fort and city.

The fort near the clock tower is approximately 600 years old. A property that was won by the Great Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Connected with the fort in Phillaur via an underground tunnel.

But can you believe that still, this fort is begging for its identity? Unfortunately, it is. This blog post is my personal experience here presenting the true story of its life.

The fort is located in the heart of Ludhiana City near the clock tower. Most of us go for the Dussehra ground for fair but I am pretty sure that you never knew that within a few meters, there is 600 years old fort. It is in the vicinity of Dushehra ground at just walking distance. By the way, the area itself is called a “Qilla mohalla”. But unfortunately, only a few people know why it is named “Qilla mohalla”

Fort is about 10 minutes of walking distance from the clock tower and can be reached easily. Instead of asking the locals you should follow Google Maps to reach here. Most of them do not actually know. I personally did the same.

My Personal Experience here

Actually, I was looking for the next Vlog idea & started researching on the internet. Seriously when I got to know that Ludhiana city Itself has a Fort, I got shocked.

The vary next day, I was there for a visit. There is a big gate made of wood at the entrance like it used to be at that time. If you cross this entrance then you are in the mid of the open ground. Around this, on all four sides, different buildings for different purposes are built. Currently, this open ground has nothing to see, only vegetation can be seen.

  • I am not a history student but I can still find a relation between Ludhiana city and this fort. It itself got Its name from Sultan Lodhi who settled this city and named it Lodhiana. With time it got the current name it has.

  • On the left side, a college has been opened. Another textile college was also there some years ago but now shifted to some other location. On the same side, multiple rooms are available in series.
  • Now you imagine someday, inside the assembly there used to be lots of Royal functions like dance, secretariat, meetings, and so many other important things. But now have a look at this.

  • On the opposite side to the entrance of the fort also known as Purana Qilla locally, an assembly attracted me more. It is a long big hall with a single roof almost 100 m long or maybe more. All the rooms and assembly or any other building are made with the same technique of arches and pillars. But bricks had been used there. All this is very similar to modern-day construction.

  • It seems like it has forgotten itself and nobody knows when it will regain its lost identity. The government should not have left this heritage on its own.
  • After this, I begin my search for the famous tunnel that connects this fort with another fort approximately 25 km away with an underground tunnel located in Phillaur. This fort in Phillaur is said to be the residence of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

  • I met the principal of the college inside, A fine man who has a lot of knowledge about this fort and working here since 1986. He told me that there are two more tunnels like this, and out of both ones goes up to Ferozpur. I wish I could go inside the tunnel but it was choked fully with the garbage so I did not even try to enter it.
