Mehrangarh Fort also called “Mehran Fort” was built in 1459 by Rao Jodha in Jodhpur Rajasthan. The meaning of Mehran is “The Sun”. This Fort was maintained by many Maharajas including Ajit Singh Maharaja, Maldeo Maharaja, and more, after Roa Jodha.

It is one of the largest forts in the country and is situated at the top of 140 feet. Mehrangarh Fort is guarded by massive walls and has seven gates. These gates are called Victory Gate, Gopal Gate, Fateh Gate, Bhairon Gate, Marti Gate, Dedh Kamgra Gate, and Marti Gate.

The intricate carvings on the fort walls, sprawling courtyards, striking places, museums, galleries, and most significantly its impressive history attract visitors from all over the world.

Location and How to Reach Mehrangarh Fort 

Fort is only 6 km from the Jodhpur railway station and 9 km from the Jodhpur Airport. It’s very easy to reach there. For this, you can get easy transport like a Cab, Bike, or Auto Rickshaw (TUK TUK ).

I personally chose to get a bike on rent and visited the whole city with that, I personally feel it is the best way to experience the beauty of the city. In this way, we covered almost all of the city in just 2 days.

The rental bike ranges between 300 to 1500 rs depending upon the two-wheeler you take, The petrol cost you have to bear yourself.

 Jhanki Mahal

Jhanki Mahal in Mehrangarh Fort is mainly used by the royal queens to see outside the palace. It had latticed screens so that nobody could see them even though they see through the window. Women in the palace who want to see outside must follow the purdah system. One of the best features of this palace is the placement of mirrors.

Sheesh Mahal

Sheesh Mahal, the glass place in Jaipur, was located behind the main Moti Bagh Palace. It is one of the famous Mahals near Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. It has an exemplary reflection of the rich culture as well as heritage.

Special facts: Sheesh Mahal is only covered with mirrors and these mirrors are imported from Belgium

4. Takhat Vilas

Maharaja Takhat Singh created this Takhat Vilas palace. Unfortunately, he was the last ruler who lived in the Mehrangarh Fort. Many traditional styles had been used in this palace to decorate. Come here to look at these beautiful artworks.

Special facts: It is decorated from ceiling to floor with paintings that include folk-style pictures, Hindu gods, Rajasthani folk tales, and also portraits of European women.

5. Moti Mahal in Mehrangarh fort

Moti Mahal is the largest room as well as the brightest room among the five historic rooms in Mehrangarh Fort. It was also said as “ palace of pearls” which was built by Raja Sur Singh. This amazing palatial room is filled with colored window glasses and decorated ceilings. These are adorned with sea shells gold leaf and mirrors. Visit this palace at once to look at the royal throne.

Special facts: Moti Mahal has the royal throne where the king always sits and listens to a court proceeding is called ” Srinagar Chowki”

  • Currently, the fort is being developed in a more vibrant and adventurous spot, for tourists. Outside the main gate and there is Zip Line developed by the authorities. Many tourists come to experience the adventurous sport.

The fee for Zip Line is 1700 to 2000 rs for an Adult.

If You live with in the city then there could not be any other better place to hang out with your friends and family. In the evening, under the light sunlight and the Hustle and bustle of the tourists, the vibe is too good to enjoy.

  • Musicians inside the fort

    When you go inside, just after the first massive gate you enter, you will find a singer singing regional folk songs and some classy Bollywood songs too. One of my favorites is “Udd Ja Kale Kava” and “Kesariya Balam”

    When you realize that it’s only the beginning of the tour and the whole fort is pending, gives you more pleasure.

What the other small mahal took place in Mehrangarh Fort?

Khabka mahal: This was used as a sleeping palace that contains two rooms. They are Dipak Mahal and Chandan Mahal

Moti Vilas: Moti Vilas palace in Mehrangarh Fort contains carved lattice screens. Here, the Zenana court was presented which was constructed using stones.

Sardar Vilas: Sardar villas were built nearby to Moti Vilas with beautiful woodwork. This palace woodwork was plated with gold and decoration was done with ivory.

Umaid villas: Umaid vilas palace in Mehrangarh Fort has intake many paintings including the picture of Maharaja Pratap Singh and Maharawal Jaswant Singh, Jaisalmer. Visitors can also find the painting of kings playing Holi festival with their wives.
